If you’re expecting to be taken seriously then you need to
own your blog – if you’re on BlogSpot it
is easy to transfer over it’s literally one click and a credit/ debit card and
it does everything.
On WordPress.com,
you can use a custom domain for your blog (such as yourgroovydomain.com)
instead of the default address you get when you sign up (like
yourgroovydomain.wordpress.com). This is called Domain Mapping, and it’s a paid
upgrade:
Registering a .com, .org, or .net domain through
WordPress.com and mapping that domain to your blog starts at $18.00 per domain
and per year, or $25.00 per domain and per year for a .me domain. For $8.00
more, you can also make the domain registration private-Mapping a domain you
already own costs $13.00 per domain, per year.
So both are simple – so do get professional
Just wanted to say that this isn't the best way to build long-term authority to your site. Buying a domain like this but still using Blogger or WordPress.com means that you've just bought a vanity URL - it looks like you own the site, but really, you're just renting from WordPress or Google. If you want to build your site for the long term, you'll need to have access to the back end - so you should buy a domain from Go Daddy or similar and then self-host your blog using WordPress.com or Drupal. Give me a shout if I can offer any advice!
ReplyDeleteCarley,
DeleteThanks for your comment but you can access the back end on BlogSpot and they give the Go Daddy option on BlogSpot - but you have to also remember some people do blogging as a hobby and stick with what they are comfortable with and have a limited budget or resources so we just cover what is easy for bloggers.
We are a jargon free area as we know that this puts of most people - so we try to just keep it simple
I understand that lots of people blog as a hobby - my social media blog is on blogspot and I love that for quick and easy blogging! I just wanted to say that if people do want to turn blogging into a way to earn money then they'd need to build authority to their blog, which means you need to self host.
DeleteApologies if this has too much jargon, I just know that when I first started blogging I wanted to find out as much as possible and I got lots of help from other bloggers so always want to return the favour!
